Indonesia 2010 SYOG

The 2-stamp Indonesian issue for the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympics was supposed to have been released 15 July 2010. However, I did not see anything on the Internet about it, until late October, posted on eBay for sale! The 2 se-tenant stamps together feature 2 badminton players in the foreground; and in the background are silhouettes of youth handling musical instruments, the obvious one is the angklong on the left stamp, and probably a brass gong on the right one.

Singapore 2010 Festivals

Singapore Post released the biennale festivals stamps on 20 October 2010. These stamps depict the festivals celebrated by the 4 main races in Singapore - Chinese New Year for the Chinese, Hari Raya Haji/Puasa for the Malays, Deepavali or Diwali for the Indians and for the Eurasians who are mostly Christians, Christmas. There are 2 stamps for each festival, the 1st local one for local addressee and the 55-cent post card rate for posting overseas; for many years Singapore Post has implemented special rates for posting greeting cards weighing not more than 40g at 55 cents. The 55-cent stamps are printed with metal foil on part of their designs, giving a holographic effect for the twinkling festival mood. This year, a collector's sheet is also released, containing 8 stamps with the same designs, but with the 1st local stamps face values changed to S$1.10, and printed with metal foil on some parts of the design, like the 55-cent stamps.

Kent Ridge Park Trail 2010

This set of stamps released on 22 September 2010 celebrates a heritage trail in Singapore: The Kent Ridge Park Trail. Formerly known as Pasir Panjang Ridge, the area was used as a fortress by the British to defend Singapore against Japanese invasion in 1942. The site for the Battle for Pasir Panjang, one of the last battles bitterly fought by the Malay Regiment against the Japanese army during World War II, was at Bukit Chandu, a hill in the park. Today, a colonial bungalow at 31K Bukit Chandu has been restored and converted into a World War II war museum - Reflections at Bukit Chandu, commemorating the brave defenders who fought beyond their last bullet.

Aside from historical significance, the Kent Ridge Park is now an undisturbed habitat with an abundance of flora and fauna as illustrated in the 4 se-tenant stamps of the issue. Prominent on the 80-cent stamp is the white bellied sea eagle. A series of wooden walkways and bridges have been contructed along the trail to allow the enjoyment of nature by people of all ages.

This is the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games MyStamp sheetlet, the size is that of a A5 sheet, in horizontal mode. It was released on the games opening day, 14 August 2010; priced at SGD15.50 at post offices, it comes in a hard board folder. There are 2 large panes on the sheetlet, the top pane shows the 2010 YOG logo, and the lower one displays the games mascots, Lyo and Merly. This sheet is supposedly available with the panes available for personalisation, i.e. one can send in a couple of photos to be printed on these panes. This is a very innovative idea for the games, because I can think of games participants printing their moments of victory on these panes! I understand that this sheetlet was sold out within a week of release.

Singapore 2009 Asian Youth Games

This MyStamp sheet was released 29 June 2009, to mark the opening of the 1st Asian Youth Games (AYG) in Singapore. The release was rather restrained, in that the Singapore Post did not make any big announcement for it, because it was commissioned by the organisers of the AYG; actually it was lumped together with other AYG souvenirs, liked the AYG mascot stuffed toy and AYG mugs, in a sales brochure. What is interesting is that it contains the latest MyStamp 1st local stamps with vignettes featuring the mascot lion playing various sports: table tennis, springboard diving, yachting/sailing, basketball, 10-pin bowling, shooting, volleyball, athletics, soccer and swimming.

The orange creature is Lyo, a young lion, and the blue one is called Merly, supposed to be a youth version of the Merlion .... hmm ... looks that the juvenile Merlion has legs! The remaining question now is whether merlions lay eggs or have life birth ...

Singapore 2010 Year of Tiger

For the Year of the Tiger, the Singapore Post issued on 8 January 2010, a set of 3 stamps and a collector's sheet. The stamps were for 1st local, 65 cents for Asian destination (Japan excluded), and $1.10 for Japan and the rest of the world.
The collector's sheet contains 2 stamps, with face values of $5.00 and $10.00, but it is sold at the post office for $16.80. These stamps are printed with transparent holograms, the hologram on the $5.00-stamp shows the morphing of an ox into a tiger - alluding to the transition from the Year of the Ox to the Year of the Tiger, while the hologram on the $10.00-stamp shows the morphing of a tiger into a rabbit, for the transition of the current Year of Tiger to the following Year of the Rabbit.
This is the third such collector's sheet issued by the Singapore Post, the first two issued in the last two years, starting with the Year of the Rat, and then the Year of the Ox. On the top left corner of the sheet are two ancient Chinese characters representing the word for "tiger".
The holograms on the stamps show up as shadows in my scan of the sheet.
